participant observation
This term is a technical designation used primarily in anthropology, sociology, and ethnography. It describes a dual-role approach where the researcher balances the role of an objective observer with that of a community member. The goal is to capture "emic" perspectives—the internal logic and meanings of a culture—which would be invisible to a detached observer.
Because it is a specialized methodological term, it is almost always used in academic or professional research contexts. It is distinct from simple observation or interviewing because it requires a prolonged period of immersion and active engagement in the social life of the subjects being studied.
