methodology
This term is frequently misused as a synonym for method. While a method is a specific tool or a single way of doing something, a methodology is the overarching theoretical framework that justifies why certain methods are chosen over others. In academic and corporate settings, it carries a high level of formality and implies a structured, scientific approach. Using it to describe a simple recipe or a personal habit often sounds pretentious or technically incorrect, as it suggests a level of systemic rigor that is absent in casual tasks.
Countable when referring to a specific system of rules used by a group (e.g., an Agile methodology). Uncountable when referring to the general study or science of methods.
