orthologue
This term is used exclusively within the specialized fields of genetics and evolutionary biology to describe genes in different species that share a common ancestor. It is a technical term of art, meaning it is rarely encountered outside of scientific literature or academic discourse.
It is frequently contrasted with paralogue, which refers to genes that duplicated within a single genome. While orthologues typically retain the same function across different species, paralogues often evolve new functions.
