methanol là một hợp chất hóa học cụ thể, thường được gọi là rượu gỗ, có đặc tính độc hại cao đối với cơ thể người. Trong tiếng Việt, thuật ngữ này được dịch chính xác là "mêtanol". Người học cần đặc biệt lưu ý phân biệt methanol với ethanol (rượu etylic) – loại cồn có trong đồ uống có cồn. Mặc dù cả hai đều là rượu và có công thức hóa học tương tự, nhưng methanol không thể uống được và có thể gây mù lòa hoặc tử vong nếu hấp thụ.
