squares
/skwerz/
The term carries a sharp contrast between mathematical precision and social rigidity. In a geometric sense, it evokes stability, symmetry, and exactness, which is why it is used in architecture and design to suggest order. When applied to people, this same sense of rigidity becomes a pejorative. Calling someone a square implies they are too predictable or stifled by rules, transforming a symbol of stability into a symbol of boredom and lack of creativity.
Countable when referring to individual shapes or city plazas. Uncountable when used in the mathematical sense of the operation of squaring.
