This term originates from architectural theory but is most frequently used today as a sociological metaphor. It describes a state of permanent visibility where the subject cannot know for certain if they are being watched at any given moment, creating a psychological pressure to self-police and conform to norms.

In academic and critical discourse, it is often contrasted with traditional surveillance. While standard monitoring focuses on catching a specific act, the panopticon focuses on the internalisation of the gaze, where the mere possibility of surveillance alters human behavior.
