この言葉は、圧力や、決して越えてはならない境界線という感覚を呼び起こします。技術的、数学的、あるいは専門的な場面で頻繁に使われ、時間や予算、物理法則など、計画における絶対的な限界を表現します。自由が欠けていることや、対処しなければならない障害があることを示唆するため、中立的またはわずかに否定的な響きがあります。
制限（restriction）が権力者によって課される規則であることが多いのに対し、制約（constraint）は体系的または本質的な限界である場合が多いです。例えば、法律は制限にあたりますが、光速は制約にあたります。これは、状況における可能な結果を決定づける構造的な境界があることを意味しています。
