認知的な文脈において、bias（偏見）とは判断の天秤にかかる目に見えない重りのようなものです。これは中立性の欠如を意味し、客観的な根拠よりも、過去の経験や先入観によって視点が歪んでいることを示唆します。prejudice（偏見）という言葉は、より攻撃的で敵対的な印象を与えることが多いですが、bias（偏見）は微細なものである場合や、無意識に生じている場合もあります。これはある方向への傾き、つまり決定を一方へ引き寄せる心理的な重力のようなものを表現しています。
技術的または数学的な文脈では、系統的な誤差を指します。これは公平性の問題ではなく、正確性の問題であり、真の値から一貫してずれている状態を指します。
