consciousness

/ˈkɒnʃəsnəs/

[C/U] 両方

The state of being aware of and responsive to one's surroundings, as well as the internal experience of existing. It is the "inner light" or the subjective quality of experience (qualia) that distinguishes a sentient being from an automaton. In a medical context, it refers specifically to wakefulness or alertnessthe binary state of being conscious versus unconscious (e.g., after a fainting spell). In philosophical and psychological contexts, it carries a deeper nuance of self-awareness: the ability to reflect on one's own thoughts and existence. This is often contrasted with "subconscious" processes that happen beneath the level of active awareness. It can also describe a moral or social awakening, such as "class consciousness," where it shifts from a biological state to a cognitive realization of one's position in a system.

Uncountable when referring to the general state of being aware or the philosophical concept of the mind. Countable when referring to specific levels or types of awareness, such as different states of consciousness.
