woke
The adjective "woke" exists in a state of extreme semantic tension. In its positive sense, it describes a conscious awareness of systemic oppression and a commitment to social justice. It is often used within activist circles to signal solidarity and political alertness.
Conversely, the term is frequently used as a pejorative by political opponents. In this register, it characterizes social justice efforts as performative, superficial, or ideologically extreme. Because of this polarization, the word's meaning often depends entirely on the political alignment of the speaker.
As a verb, "woke" is strictly the past tense of "wake." It describes the physical or mental transition from sleep to wakefulness and does not share the political connotations of the adjective.
