The guiro is a staple of Afro-Caribbean music, particularly in salsa, son, and cumbia. It provides a distinct, rasping rhythmic texture that serves as a percussive backbone, often contrasting with the smoother sounds of horns or vocals.

While traditionally crafted from a dried gourd, modern versions are frequently made of plastic or metal to ensure durability and consistency in tone. It is played by scraping a small stick, known as a plectrum, across the notches, creating a rhythmic "chatter" that defines the drive of the music.
