ringtoneは、電話やメッセージなどの通知を知らせるための音を指します。現代では単なる信号音だけでなく、お気に入りの楽曲や録音した音声を設定することが一般的であり、個人の好みを表現する手段としても利用されています。
通知音との使い分け
一般的にringtoneは、電話の着信時に鳴る音を指して使われます。一方で、メールやアプリの通知など、短い時間だけ鳴る音はnotification sound（通知音）と区別されることが多いです。ただし、日常会話ではこれらを厳密に分けず、まとめてringtoneと呼ぶ場合もあります。
設定に関する表現
着信音を変更したり設定したりする際には、以下のような表現がよく使われます。
