velarization
This term is a specialized linguistic descriptor used primarily in phonetics and phonology. It describes a specific articulatory gesture where the tongue body is retracted toward the soft palate, creating a distinct acoustic quality often associated with "dark" consonants. In English, this is most prominently observed in the "dark l" (ɫ) found at the end of words like "ball" or "feel."
Because it describes a physiological process of speech production, the term is almost exclusively used in academic, clinical, or technical contexts. It is not a word used in general conversation unless discussing the mechanics of language or speech therapy.
