pagode
This term refers specifically to a cultural phenomenon from Brazil. While it describes a musical genre, it is equally used to describe the social event itself. In a Brazilian context, a pagode is often an informal, communal gathering characterized by a relaxed atmosphere, percussion instruments, and a strong sense of camaraderie.
Because the word is borrowed from Portuguese, it retains its specific cultural identity. It should not be confused with the architectural "pagoda" found in East Asia, despite the phonetic similarity. When used in English, it typically appears in discussions of world music or Brazilian sociology.
