In modern usage, this word is most frequently encountered as a sociological and political term. It describes the conceptual framework where various social identities—such as race, gender, class, and sexual orientation—overlap to create unique modes of discrimination or privilege. It is a high-register term common in academia, social justice activism, and legal discourse.
When used in this sociological sense, it is not merely about "adding" different types of discrimination together, but about how they interact to create a distinct experience. For example, the experience of a Black woman is viewed as different from the sum of "being Black" and "being a woman."
In a literal or physical sense, the word describes things that cross or meet at a point. This usage is much more technical and is typically found in architecture, urban planning, or geometry. It is far less common in daily conversation than the sociological application.
