probative
This term is primarily restricted to legal and formal academic registers. It describes the quality of evidence that is sufficient to establish a fact or prove a point, moving beyond mere relevance to actually provide proof. In a courtroom, evidence is probative if it has the power to influence the outcome of the case by confirming or denying a specific allegation.
It is frequently contrasted with "prejudicial" in legal settings. While probative evidence helps prove a fact, prejudicial evidence may unfairly bias a judge or jury without providing actual proof. Because of this tension, judges often weigh the probative value of a piece of evidence against its potential for unfair prejudice before allowing it to be presented.
