constraining
This term carries a strong sense of external pressure or systemic limitation. While similar to "restrictive," "constraining" often implies a force that actively pushes back or squeezes the possibilities of growth, movement, or expression. It is frequently used in professional, academic, or technical registers to describe barriers such as budgets, laws, or physical boundaries.
When used as an adjective, it describes the nature of a limitation (e.g., a constraining environment). When used as a verb, it describes the act of imposing that limit. It is distinct from "coercing," which implies forcing someone to act against their will; "constraining" focuses on the limitation of the ability to act at all.
