scripture

[C/U] Both
pl: scriptures

This term carries a weight of absolute authority and timelessness. It is not merely a book or a text, but is viewed as a direct communication from a deity or a divine source to humanity, making it immutable and sacred. While a general text is read for information, scripture is studied for guidance, law, and spiritual salvation. It is almost exclusively used in religious contexts; using it to describe a secular document would be seen as an ironic or hyperbolic statement about that document's perceived infallibility.

Countable when referring to specific passages or individual sacred texts (the scriptures). Uncountable when referring to the general body of divine revelation (scripture).

Meanings
