unexpecting
This term describes a state of being unaware that something is about to happen. It is most frequently used to emphasize the element of surprise or the vulnerability of a person who is not prepared for an upcoming event. While similar to "unexpected," which describes the event itself, "unexpecting" describes the mental state of the person experiencing the event.
In modern usage, this word is significantly less common than "unexpected" or "unsuspecting." The latter is generally preferred when describing someone who is caught off guard, as "unexpecting" can occasionally sound archaic or slightly non-standard in contemporary professional registers.
