deontology
This term describes a rule-based approach to morality where the morality of an action is based on whether that action itself is right or wrong under a series of rules, rather than based on the consequences of the action. It is most frequently encountered in academic philosophy, legal theory, and professional codes of conduct, such as medical ethics.
Because it focuses on absolute duties and obligations, it stands in direct opposition to consequentialism or utilitarianism. While a utilitarian might justify a lie to save a life, a strict deontologist would argue that lying is inherently wrong regardless of the outcome.
