winded
This term describes a specific state of respiratory distress. It is most commonly used in athletic or accidental contexts to describe the sudden inability to breathe. While it can refer to the gradual loss of breath from exertion, it carries a strong association with the jarring, diaphragm-stopping sensation caused by a physical blow to the torso.
In terms of register, it is a standard descriptive adjective used in both casual conversation and sports reporting. It should not be confused with "breathless," which can also imply emotional excitement or awe; "winded" almost exclusively denotes a physical, often painful, struggle for air.
