polysemy
This term describes the linguistic property where a single word carries several distinct but conceptually linked senses. It differs from homonymy, where words sound the same but have entirely unrelated origins and meanings. For instance, the word bank can refer to a financial institution or the side of a river; the latter is a case of homonymy, whereas the various meanings of the word run (to move fast, to manage a business, to flow) illustrate polysemy because they share a core idea of continuous movement.
