この言葉は、仕事に伴う専門的なアイデンティティやキャリアアップよりも、お金を稼いで生き延びるという生存の側面に重点を置いています。家族を養ったり、家を維持したりする能力が危うくなるような状況で使われることが多く、切実さや不安定さを感じさせる表現です。
生涯にわたる専門的な歩みを指す career とは異なり、livelihood は貧困を回避するための現実的な仕組みを指します。そのため、社会的な弱者の方々や、時代遅れになりつつある伝統産業に関する社会学的、あるいは経済的な議論の中で頻繁に用いられます。
Countable when referring to specific types of work or different sources of income (e.g., the village had several different livelihoods like fishing and weaving). Uncountable when referring to the general state of being able to support oneself financially.
