物理的な大きさや範囲を指す際、dimension は単なる長さだけでなく、幅や高さ、奥行きといった複数の方向性を包括的に捉える言葉です。日本語の寸法に近い意味ですが、より広義に空間的な広がりを指す場合によく使われます。
概念的な側面や視点
物理的な意味以外に、問題や状況の側面や次元という意味で頻繁に用いられます。ある事柄に新しい視点や複雑さが加わった際に、add a new dimension to という表現で使われることが多く、単なる特徴ではなく、物事の捉え方を変えるような重要な要素を指します。
空想的な世界観
SF映画や小説などで、私たちが住む三次元の世界とは異なる異次元や並行世界を指して another dimension と表現します。これは物理学的な概念から派生した比喩的な表現です。
注意すべき点
日本語で次元が違うと言うとき、能力やレベルの圧倒的な差を指すことがありますが、英語の dimension を使って different dimension と言うと、物理的な世界線が異なる、あるいは全く異なる性質の側面を持っているという意味になり、必ずしも能力の上下を意味しません。能力の差を伝えたい場合は different level などを用いるのが適切です。
