This term is a technical specification used primarily in physics, chemistry, and molecular biology. It describes the opacity of a substance, where a higher value indicates that more light is absorbed or scattered and less is transmitted through the sample.
In laboratory settings, it is frequently used interchangeably with absorbance, although strictly speaking, optical density refers to the physical property of the medium while absorbance refers to the amount of light absorbed by a specific solute. Because it is a logarithmic ratio, it allows researchers to linearize the relationship between the concentration of a substance and the light it blocks.
