This term is a technical specification within the OSI model, referring specifically to the hardware components of a network. It encompasses the actual cables, connectors, and signaling methods used to move data. In professional networking contexts, it is often contrasted with the data link layer or the network layer to isolate whether a connectivity issue is a hardware failure or a software configuration error.
