zucchini
This term is the standard North American name for the summer squash known as courgette in British English. It carries a neutral, culinary connotation and is almost exclusively used in the context of food preparation, gardening, or nutrition.
While the word is often used as an uncountable mass noun when referring to the vegetable as an ingredient (e.g., "too much zucchini in the soup"), it is also used as a countable noun when referring to the individual fruits (e.g., "three zucchinis"). Both usages are acceptable in modern English.
