magmatism
This term is a specialized technical noun used almost exclusively within the fields of geology and volcanology. It describes the systemic behavior of magma rather than a single volcanic event, encompassing the entire lifecycle from generation in the mantle or crust to its eventual cooling.
In academic writing, it is frequently paired with adjectives that describe the chemical composition of the magma, such as alkaline, calc-alkaline, or tholeiitic. It should not be confused with volcanism, which specifically refers to the eruption of magma onto the surface; magmatism includes all activity, including that which remains trapped underground as plutons.
