soft power

This term describes a form of diplomatic influence that relies on the appeal of a nation's culture, political ideals, and policies. It stands in direct contrast to hard power, which involves military force or economic sanctions to compel obedience. The essence of soft power is the ability to shape the preferences of others so that they want what you want, rather than being forced to do so.

In political science and international relations, the term is used to analyze how non-coercive tools—such as educational exchanges, pop culture exports, and humanitarian aid—create a positive image of a state. Because it is an abstract concept referring to a capacity or quality of influence, it is treated as an uncountable noun and does not have a plural form.
