aphanitic
This term is a specialized geological descriptor used primarily in petrology to characterize igneous rocks. It describes a fine-grained texture resulting from rapid cooling, which prevents crystals from growing large enough to be visible without magnification. It is the direct opposite of phaneritic texture, where crystals are coarse and easily seen.
Because it is a technical scientific term, it is almost exclusively found in academic papers, geological surveys, and textbooks. It is not used in general conversation or non-scientific contexts.
