impasse
This term evokes a sense of total stagnation and frustration. In a social or political context, it describes a psychological and strategic freeze where two opposing forces are equally matched in their stubbornness, making any forward movement impossible without a fundamental change in position. When used to describe a physical path, it refers to a literal blockage or a street that terminates abruptly. Unlike a simple detour, an impasse suggests a finality that forces the traveler to turn back entirely.
Meanings
A situation in which no progress is possible, especially because of a disagreement; a deadlock.
"The negotiations reached an impasse when neither side would compromise on the budget."
