This term refers specifically to the palatine tonsils, though it is often used colloquially to encompass the entire ring of lymphatic tissue in the throat. In medical contexts, it is associated with inflammation (tonsillitis) or surgical removal (tonsillectomy).
Because humans typically possess a pair of these organs, the word is almost exclusively used in the plural form when referring to the anatomical structures in a general sense. While a single tonsil can be discussed in a clinical setting, the plural is the standard default for general health descriptions.
