This term originates from economics and behavioral psychology, describing a psychological trap where individuals continue an endeavor because of previously invested resources, regardless of the current utility. It carries a strong negative connotation of irrationality and stubbornness, often used to criticize poor management or emotional attachment to a failing venture.
In professional and academic registers, it is most frequently paired with the word fallacy to describe the cognitive bias itself. While a sunk cost is the actual expenditure, the sunk cost fallacy is the erroneous logic of letting that expenditure dictate future actions.
