reducing agent
This term is a technical designation used primarily in chemistry to describe a specific role within a redox reaction. It carries a neutral, scientific connotation and is used in both academic textbooks and laboratory reports to identify the species that undergoes oxidation.
In practical application, the term is often paired with its counterpart, the oxidizing agent. While a reducing agent provides electrons, the oxidizing agent accepts them. Misidentifying these roles is a common error for students of chemistry, as the agent that causes reduction is itself reduced in the opposite process.
