papular
Papular is a technical medical term used almost exclusively in dermatology and clinical pathology. It describes a specific type of skin lesion—a papule—which is characterized by being solid and raised. In a clinical setting, this term is used to provide a precise physical description of a rash or eruption to aid in diagnosis.
Crucially, papular is used to distinguish solid bumps from vesicular or pustular lesions. While a papular lesion is solid, a vesicular lesion contains clear fluid (a blister) and a pustular lesion contains pus. Using "papular" instead of "bumpy" or "raised" signals a professional medical register.
Because it is a specialized adjective, it is rarely used in casual conversation. A patient might say they have "small bumps," but a physician will record the finding as a "papular eruption" or "papular rash" in a medical chart.
