intercellular space
This term is primarily used in histology, cytology, and plant anatomy to describe the physical gaps between cells. It carries a neutral, scientific connotation and is used to discuss the transport of ions, water, and signaling molecules within a tissue.
In botanical contexts, these spaces are critical for gas exchange, whereas in animal tissues, the space is often occupied by the extracellular matrix. It should not be confused with the intracellular space, which refers to the area inside the cell membrane.
