The word "sekai" is highly versatile, extending far beyond the physical boundaries of the planet Earth. While it translates to "world," its usage in Japanese covers three distinct conceptual layers: the global, the social, and the psychological.

In its most literal sense, it refers to the entire globe or the totality of human society. In this context, it is often used in formal or grand scales, such as discussing global peace or international trends.

When used as "〜の世界" (the world of...), it describes a specific social circle, a professional field, or a specialized community. This refers to a "sphere" where specific rules, customs, and hierarchies apply. For example, the "world of sumo" or the "world of politics" implies a closed society with its own unique internal logic.

Additionally, "sekai" can describe a subjective or imaginary space. This includes mental states, dreams, or fictional settings (as seen in the popular "isekai" or "different world" genre in anime and manga). It represents a realm that exists independently of the physical reality.

It is important to distinguish "sekai" from "yononaka" (世の中). While "sekai" is often objective, expansive, and can be physical or imaginary, "yononaka" refers more specifically to the current state of society, public opinion, or the "way of the world" as experienced in daily life. "Sekai" is the stage; "yononaka" is the social atmosphere and the reality of living within it.
