競争

The word refers to the act of competing to achieve a superior position or result. While often associated with business or sports, it also applies to academic or social contexts. It carries a dual nuance: it can be positive, implying mutual improvement and growth (similar to the concept of "sessha-takuma"), or negative, implying excessive pressure and stress.

In a business context, "kyousou" (競争) is a general term for competition. It is often contrasted with "kyougou" (競合), which specifically refers to "competitors" or the state of overlapping business interests. While "kyousou" describes the process of striving to win, "kyougou" focuses on the existence of rival entities in the same market.

Commonly used with verbs like "suru" (to compete), "katsu" (to win), or "sarasareru" (to be exposed to competition). It is a neutral to formal term suitable for almost any register, from daily conversation to academic papers.
