This term describes the quality of the blur rather than the quantity of the blur. While a shallow depth of field determines how much of the image is out of focus, bokeh refers to the visual character of those blurred highlights, such as whether they appear as soft, creamy circles or harsh, jagged shapes.

Derived from the Japanese word boke, meaning blur or haze, it is used primarily in photography and cinematography. It is an uncountable noun in most technical contexts, as it refers to an abstract aesthetic quality of light and optics.
