UTP
UTP stands for Unshielded Twisted Pair. It is the most common type of cabling used in Ethernet networks and local area networks (LANs). The term describes the physical construction of the cable: pairs of copper wires are twisted together to reduce electromagnetic interference, but unlike STP (Shielded Twisted Pair), it lacks an overall foil or braided shield.
In a professional IT or networking context, UTP is often referred to as the default or standard choice for indoor office wiring due to its flexibility and lower cost. When a technician mentions "standard cabling" or "Cat5e/Cat6" without specifying shielding, they are usually referring to UTP.
Because it lacks shielding, UTP is susceptible to external interference from power lines or heavy machinery. Therefore, in industrial environments or areas with high electrical noise, professionals will specify STP instead of UTP to ensure signal integrity.
