This term is primarily used in ecological, botanical, and geographical contexts to describe a specific transition zone. It carries a technical register, typically appearing in scientific reports, field guides, or academic descriptions of mountain topography. It describes the precise belt where the environment is too harsh for tall, upright trees but still supports hardy, stunted coniferous growth.
