Stratify is a formal, academic term. It is rarely used in casual conversation and is most common in scientific reports, sociological analyses, or statistical research. The core image is that of distinct, horizontal layers (strata) stacked upon one another, whether those layers are physical materials or social ranks.

In a sociological context, it describes the systemic division of a population into levels based on wealth, power, or status. While "divide" is a general term, "stratify" specifically implies a vertical hierarchy where some layers are "above" others.

In technical or statistical contexts, such as "stratified sampling," it refers to the process of dividing a diverse population into homogeneous subgroups to ensure each group is accurately represented. This is more precise than "segmenting," which often refers to marketing categories rather than structural layers.

In geology or chemistry, it describes the natural process of forming layers. When used intransitively (e.g., "the lake stratifies"), it describes a state of being where different densities or temperatures prevent mixing.
