This term evokes an image of aristocratic grandeur and abundance. While it can describe literal royal status, it is more frequently used to describe things that are impressively lavish or opulent, often carrying a tone of admiration for the scale of luxury or generosity involved.
In modern usage, the word often appears in a slightly ironic or hyperbolic sense when referring to large sums of money. Describing a payment as a princely sum suggests that the amount is far beyond the ordinary, bordering on the extravagant.
