artesian
artesian
Adjective
This term is a specialized geological descriptor used almost exclusively in technical, agricultural, or environmental contexts. It describes a specific hydraulic condition where water is trapped under pressure between impermeable layers of rock, forcing it upward when a borehole penetrates the upper layer.
Because it describes a specific physical mechanism of water flow, it is rarely used outside of phrases like "artesian well" or "artesian basin." It should not be confused with general groundwater or standard wells that require mechanical pumping to reach the water table.
