supremum
This term is used exclusively within the specialized register of mathematical analysis and set theory. It describes a precise boundary condition where a value acts as the tightest possible ceiling for a given set, distinguishing it from a general upper bound which could be any value larger than the set's elements.
In a pedagogical context, it is often contrasted with the infimum, which represents the greatest lower bound. While a maximum must be an element of the set itself, a supremum may exist even if the set does not contain its own maximum, such as in the case of an open interval.
