phagosome
This term describes a specialized cellular compartment that acts as a temporary holding chamber for foreign material. It carries a clinical and biological connotation of containment and destruction, specifically within the context of the innate immune response where macrophages or neutrophils isolate pathogens to prevent them from damaging the rest of the cytoplasm.
Because it is a technical biological term, it is used almost exclusively in scientific literature, medical textbooks, and laboratory reports. It is distinct from a lysosome, which is the organelle containing digestive enzymes; the phagosome is the vehicle that carries the prey until it merges with that lysosome to become a phagolysosome.
