kanji
Kanji refers specifically to the Chinese characters adopted into the Japanese language. It is distinct from hiragana and katakana, which are phonetic syllabaries. While kanji convey meaning (ideograms), the other two scripts are used for grammatical markers and foreign loanwords.
In English usage, the word is typically treated as an invariant noun. While some writers may add an 's' to indicate plurality, it is more common and natural to use the word as both singular and plural, similar to how words like 'sushi' or 'emoji' are often handled.
