saprophytic
This term is primarily used in biological and ecological contexts to describe organisms, such as certain fungi and bacteria, that derive their energy from non-living organic matter. It carries a neutral, scientific connotation, focusing on the functional role of the organism in nutrient cycling and decomposition within an ecosystem.
In a technical register, it is distinguished from parasitic organisms, which feed on living hosts, and symbiotic organisms, which exist in a mutually beneficial relationship. While "saprophytic" was historically used broadly, modern mycological texts often prefer "saprotrophic" to more accurately describe the process of external digestion via enzymes.
