This term describes the active, high-pressure stage of the heartbeat. It evokes a sense of sudden contraction and forceful expulsion, acting as the primary engine that drives blood through the systemic circulation. In clinical settings, it is almost always paired with diastole to describe the rhythmic oscillation of blood pressure. While diastole represents the resting and filling phase, systole represents the peak of effort and the maximum pressure exerted on the arterial walls.
