The term refers specifically to a community or region where agriculture is the primary economic activity. While it describes a physical place, it often carries a socio-economic or administrative nuance, frequently appearing in discussions about regional planning, sociology, or government policy.

Compared to the word 田舎 (inaka), which is a general, subjective term for "the countryside" or "one's hometown," 農村 is more objective and descriptive of the industry. While 田舎 can be used emotionally or casually to describe any area outside a city, 農村 specifically highlights the farming aspect of the community.

In modern contexts, it is often used in contrast with 都市 (toshi - city/urban area) to discuss the "urban-rural divide" or the challenges of maintaining traditional agricultural lifestyles in the face of modernization.
